Broadoak Cultural Festival 2024
High winds and heavy rain meant that all stalls and events had to move indoors! But the weather did not dampen the spirits of the Festival visitors. They enjoyed a variety of experiences including Turkish music and singing, Bollywood dancing, and Arabic music/song, choir, bands and storytelling sessions. There were also lots of opportunities to sample food from a variety of cultures.
HMD North Somerset was one of the 35 local partners involved this year and who provided a range of Interactive workshops. We engaged the children in making ‘Peace Birds’ and the colouring in of ‘Peace is in our Hands’ posters. Teens and adults were invited to write words of kindness to add to our large ‘Flame’ logo. Many interesting conversations were had about The Holocaust, subsequent genocides, the need to celebrate differences and to work together to prevent hate and hostility.
Special guest Phil Packer MBE, a former British Army Officer and founder of the British Inspiration Trust, hosted a special Q&A session at the close of the festival. His story of recovery and resilience was inspiring.
